J:MORS
A music video with an orchestra for the group J:MORS – Belarusian gold was filmed in the concert hall of the National Philharmonic to the accompaniment of the State Orchestra of the Republic of Belarus under the direction of Viktor Babarikin. The shooting was difficult, but the operator knew in advance what angles he needed, so everything went according to plan.
For filming, a standard set of concert stage lights was installed, which was controlled from the central console, turning on and off at the right moment, plus Jumbo backlighting. The rock band’s video turned out to be interesting thanks to the unusual arrangement and the large number of participants from among the orchestra’s musicians.
Task
To shoot a music video for a famous rock band with an arrangement from the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Belarus in the national concert hall. The music video should look impressive and dynamic.
⬤ 01. Challenge
Shoot a music video with an orchestra in a new arrangement in a concert hall.
It is very difficult to film a music video with an orchestra due to the large number of people who are on the set at the same time. This significantly increases the budget, since extras are impossible here, otherwise no one will be able to act realistically. You can move the bow and imitate the game, but any musician will immediately see the falseness, and the film effect will be lost. A music video with an orchestra always looks more impressive than others. If you want to order such a clip, check out the Instagram of our production company YOPRST.
The ideas for the video were developed by members of the J:MORS group together with our director of photography. Sasha Aleinikov worked on the light design of the frame and introduced dynamics into the video. Thanks to this, the clip looks dynamic, despite the fact that all participants are in their places.
On the set of such music videos, the track is played several times in a row so that the cameraman has time to shoot several different angles. Filming was complicated by the fact that the video production company had to simultaneously and quickly shoot many frames.
⬤ 02. Production and post
To film a music video with an orchestra, you need to be able to take on a lot of responsibility.
It’s very difficult to shoot a music video with an orchestra, and the more people there are, the more difficult it is. The principle of filming is very simple: first the master plan is shot, this is a general plan, then medium and close-ups. Why is it important to shoot the master first (this is what they call a long shot shot continuously in one frame). We will be able to take any segment from the master plan in the future, if suddenly we do not have other beautiful shots. This does not mean that the entire master plan is not beautiful. It’s just that the overall plan doesn’t always look interesting; the details in it are small.
The production of the rock band’s video took place in a short time to fit into the schedule of the participants. The rock band’s schedule was different from that of the orchestra musicians, so they had to fit in one shift.
Thanks to the excellent work of the line producer and the team he led, it was possible to complete the filming of the video within the given time frame and move on to post-production.

For this music video, a muted color palette was used, and the light and color contrast were further enhanced. This grading design matches perfectly with the features of the ARRI Alexa SXT camera.
In this clip, we did not use grain or film-like processing, since the picture turned out to be quite contrasty even without them due to the chosen light scheme.
⬤ 03. Equipment
The music video with the orchestra was shot on one of the best ARRI cameras and lenses.
A music video with an orchestra can often look like a documentary because the filming is like a reportage. Sometimes you can even see clips simply filmed at a concert and edited into one clip. Taylor Swift and Netflix even managed to make a film and earn a lot of money from it. I will only note that the music video with an orchestra looks impressive and does not cost much more than usual. In fact, we have one location, a minimum of permutations, the light is often static.
