Withered pine

A very colorful music video for an ethno group for a traditional folk song by the Belarusian performer Vuraj, which immerses you in the atmosphere of ancient Belarus, the era of princes and luxurious balls. The music itself, even without watching the video, also takes us to where it all happened. This positively distinguishes the video from others in this genre.

As a result, you are literally watching a historical chronicle of that time while the music envelops you. This effect was achieved thanks to the excellent work of the artist and director, who, together with the cameraman, achieved the effect desired by the performer. You will watch it many more times, trying to return to those times in your imagination.

⬤ 01. Challenge

The music video for the ethno group was filmed in an excellent location, with professionals and a low budget.

A music video for an ethnic group needs to be filmed with soul, because you need to feel the emotions of the time when this could happen. The entire film crew, hearing the tune for the first time, immediately wanted to take part in the project, because the music clearly gives us an idea of that time. The musicians are, of course, talented people who feel the melodies of two centuries ago, and the director found how to express this in the video. The director of photography chose good angles and, having found full understanding with the director, were able to film an interesting work.

Making a music video without money is very difficult, but if you can attract a professional team with a good idea, then the result should be quite good. The lack of budget in this case will only affect the equipment, but the idea and the burning eyes of the film crew and actors will give the new video a great start.

The shooting of the music video took seven days at several locations, but the video production company team mainly filmed on a farm near the dilapidated Radziwill estate, which still retained the vibe of those times when princes walked around the castle and balls were held.

⬤ 02. Production and post

It’s faster to shoot a music video for an ethnic group in a small team thanks to fast communication.

A music video for an ethno group is often something strange and incomprehensible, but in this case it turned out to be an interesting video. It reminded me of something from the wild hunt of King Stakh or the time of the uprising of Kastus Kalinovsky. The director and cameraman developed the script for the video and prepared storyboards that were brought to life on location. The film crew went to the old Radziwill estate, which has been located here, not far from Minsk, for more than two hundred years. The difficulty of filming was that we needed soft natural lighting for most of the scenes. Some shots required smoke, which was obtained on location in a metal barrel in which wet grass was burning.

Night scenes were shot under firelight, requiring a sensitive camera and extreme ISO settings. This required enhancing the film effect in post to eliminate unnecessary noise.

The color correction of the clip was done to enhance the film effect, increase contrasts, and add grain. All the bright colors were muted, leaving only sepia tones, pastels, some greens and velvety reds.

The material was very difficult to work with on editing and color correctionbecause everything was shot on an inexpensive Canon EOS 6D Mark III, which had a small range of exposure, especially in the shadows.

⬤ 03. Equipment

A music video for an ethno group is often filmed using inexpensive equipment.

A music video for an ethno group can be filmed with equipment of any level, but the higher it is, the better the picture will be. You can often notice that such works are filmed with almost no budget. Musicians have a rather narrow niche, a small audience, and it is very difficult to find sponsors in the CIS. Therefore, the musicians are helped by their creative friends, and in some cases, together they manage to find some kind of budget. In this case, exactly the same story happened when the budget was found almost before filming.

The Canon EOS 6D Mark II was once a great DSLR. Now it has been replaced by digital analogues. Want to rent a vintage Canon camera? Write to us in chat!
ZEISS Classic ZE 50mm F1.4 is a good semi-mechanical optic (there are versions with a Nikon ZF and ZF2 mount with a mechanical diaphragm). Sharp in the center with a slight decline towards the edges and an interesting pattern. Looking to rent Zeiss optics? Write to us in chat.
Easyrig Vario 5 with Flowcine Sirena has an excellent camera unloading and stabilization system, its flexibility allows you to take it to any project. Get an Easyrig rental. Write to us in chat.
