Dad got fired
An interesting and atmospheric ZUI indie band’s music video, which allows you to briefly look into the director’s inner world. Every viewer will find their own meanings in it, some will praise it, some will scold it. Let us note that this music video is one of the first directorial works of Alexander Aleinikov, who is the operator of our production.
The main line of the story is very simple, but at the same time it has many shades, which, together with the song of the ZUI project, create a typically Belarusian vibe of melancholy and powerlessness regarding the events around. Immersing yourself in this music video, you realize how helpless you are among the options for probable events.
Task
Create a vibe of hopelessness in the video. The artist prepared a harmonious solution for colors, costumes, and props. At the time of filming, Hurricane Gerwarth passed through the country, and the cameraman managed to use the natural chaos to enhance the atmosphere of the video.
⬤ 01. Challenge
The authors asked to shoot an emotional indie band’s music video for them.
The indie band’s music video was filmed in Belarus, which is now associated only with the sad events of 2020. However, he himself was removed long before, when a hurricane was sweeping across the country, breaking trees. In one of the scenes, our cameraman captured its consequences. An indie band’s music video is often shot as an independent project, with almost no budget. Indie musicians are often at the beginning of their journey and do not have a producer or money for good production. But if you decide to order a clip, check out the Instagram of our production company YOPRST.
We managed to shoot a video clip, which became one of the most interesting and atmospheric among the works of our operator. The story of the video began in 2017, when the authors of the song offered to make a new video for them. Together we came up with a plot for which, thanks to casting, we were able to very quickly find very well-rounded main characters.
Filming lasted four days, while Hurricane Gervert hit Belarus. The cameraman managed to use the chaos left behind in the finished video, which played into our hands and increased the hopelessness of what was happening.
⬤ 02. Production and post
The indie band’s music video took four days to shoot, and post-production took two months.
The music video of the indie band turned out to be atmospheric and sad. The tone of the clip was specially chosen to be closer to sepia, with muted colors and reduced contrast. The locations were chosen to highlight the detrimental nature of the current situation happening around us. Imagine that you find yourself in Soviet times, you have an average salary of 100 rubles, and at the same time you are fired. There is no work, no money, you are in the Soviet Union, surrounded by alcoholism, poverty and despondency.
Like any artist’s first work, this video was delayed in release. The video production company prepared the first version within a month. Then began a long process of changes, improvements, and additions, which delayed the release for two months.
At that moment, we did not understand that the first version of the video could be the best among all, but we allowed the author to get involved in the production work. This was both a plus and a minus.

Fog in the morning
In this music video we used slightly desaturated palettes. Mud creates a feeling of sadness and sorrow; beige and brown tones do not calm, but create slight tension and anticipation of someone for an event that does not happen.
Since the camera did not extend the entire exposure range, color correction had to be done with less contrast and the colors were slightly muted, and the noise was covered up with a film effect.
⬤ 03. Equipment
An indie band’s music video can easily be shot with inexpensive equipment.
A music video for an indie band should be shot by a professional production company and not for free. If you don’t have money, we recommend borrowing it, because otherwise you risk getting a useless video. Most likely it will not bring you popularity, but there are exceptions. I note that they are quite rare and you need to be very lucky if you get a successful job without a budget. A music video for an indie band without a budget will work well if you have the help of an experienced director who likes your music.
