The post-punk music video, synth-pop and new wave band Molchat Doma turned out to be stylish and enveloping. It’s as if you are immersed in the world of the video, in the music, and feel the presence of the characters and their closeness. Nostalgia for the 90s is also present thanks to the special soft and embossed image that is formed by the filters.
This look for the video was not chosen in vain, since it is very in tune with the band’s music. The music video does not have to repeat the lyrics of the song, but it must run parallel to the music. You should intuitively relate the music and video as a whole after the first viewing. If this is so, it means our team managed to make a good post-punk music video.
Task
Make a music video for a post-punk band that will evoke several emotions at the same time: sadness and joy. It should create a feeling of inspiration and a future for our characters out of the existing emptiness and loss.
⬤ 01. Challenge
To shoot a post-punk music video with two different film crews at the same time.
The music video of the post-punk band Silent at Home and the detailed script were created by a team of creators from Moscow together with the band members. Our part of the team developed and implemented part of the filming with musicians in a Minsk studio. The band’s music takes us back to the times of the 80s or 90s, when music was listened to on cassette tapes. Hence the equalizer and beats to which it was necessary to select a harmonious video sequence. A music video for a post-punk band is difficult to make without the help of the band themselves, as they have to teach you about the music.
One team filmed a music video in Moscow with an actor and actress, and the second team in Minsk with members of the group Molchat Doma. The clip had to be shot with the same cameras and optics, and then mixed in the same color scheme and the same effects applied. The clip should remind us of a picture from the 90s.
⬤ 02. Production and post
Filming a music video for a post-punk band in two countries at once is quite a difficult task.
The music video of the post-punk band, synth-pop and new wave group Molchat Doma turned out to be laconic and mysterious. The director and author of the idea tried to play with the images and also thought through the mood of the video. We have already adjusted the artistic component, makeup and costumes of the actors and musicians to suit it. The creative component of each video is often suggested by the director, and then polished together with the group. If all team members have symbiosis and the work goes smoothly, then new ideas will be easily integrated into the original idea. And the final music video of the post-punk band will become noticeably more beautiful and more popular with viewers.
When you shoot a music video with two different teams, a lot of problems arise. All of them are related to subsequent color correction, because cameras at one location are quite easy to configure in the same way. And cameras that you don’t control may not be adjusted accurately.
The production scenes of the video were filmed in Moscow, and they formed the basis of the plot of the video. To obtain an ultra-light picture, the video production company team used additional black pro mist filters and at the same time a 4×5.65″ soft filter.

When filming the video, both teams used the same ARRI Alexa Mini cameras and Cooke 5/i optics. The camera allows you to get soft natural colors and easily color them into the desired colors, and the lens gives a soft frame and pleasant blur.
The softness of the optics was further enhanced by softening filters. A film LUT was thrown on top and grain was added using Dehancer. As a result, we got a natural film effect.
⬤ 03. Equipment
ARRI cameras with Cooke 5/i optics allow you to shoot a beautiful post-punk music video.
A post-punk band’s music video won’t be popular unless you write an interesting script for it. The idea within the video should always be the driving part of the viewer. She must capture it and carry it to the end, then the clip will become popular. Lately we have noticed that many musicians want to order a video without understanding what exactly they want. In this case, your work will be done in vain, and the video in most cases will not become popular.
