The music video in the Japanese style of MADO turned out to be interesting from the point of view of the script and unusual for our market. Our director of photography Sasha Aleinikov suggested that the director from Serbia shoot a music video in a film pavilion with self-leveling floors, where a lot of water could be spilled to get beautiful reflections.
This work can still look interesting even after many years due to the excellent work of the team and the inspiration that the whole team got from the music of this group. The Japanese style of scenery and costumes, the native Japanese actress allow the viewer to immerse themselves deeply in the story and watch the video to the end literally in one breath.
Task
To shoot a beautiful music video for a rock band in Japanese style. An unusual concept was developed for the video, according to which the production designer prepared a studio and props for filming. At the request of the customer, the clip had to look as if it was shot on 35mm film.
⬤ 01. Challenge
To shoot an interesting Japanese-style music video for a St. Petersburg indie rock band.
A Japanese-style music video should be shot when you understand this style and have at least an average level of knowledge of Japan. The culture of this country extends very far back, long before the advent of our states. It is quite difficult to combine the indie rock genre and this style, but judging by this video, it turned out well. The music itself is very harmoniously combined with the picture, and the artist created excellent scenery. The St. Petersburg band MADO decided to order a music video in Minsk, for which the entire team came to filming in Belarus. The idea was proposed by the customer, and its implementation, moodboard and storyboard were proposed by our operations post Sasha Aleinikov. They were eventually approved, and pre-production began.
For the filming of the music video, the video production company chose a pavilion that had self-leveling floors, where it was easy to use a lot of water. The idea was to get mirror reflections in the surface of the water.
⬤ 02. Production and post
Making a Japanese-style music video is a task that requires creativity from every member of the production team.
A Japanese-style music video is no different in production from any other. The only difference is that we are trying to recreate a complex culture that is far from us. To solve this problem, we need an experienced consultant who knows this country and can suggest the peculiarities of its culture. This is important for the selection of props, costumes and makeup for the actors, as well as when writing the script. Without such a consultant, you will not be able to make a good Japanese-style music video.
Any music video should go with the music or tell a story that goes with the music. The task of our production was to most accurately convey the idea of the director of the video and take into account the wishes of the performer.
Since our music video production takes a responsible approach to business, we can say that not a single fish was harmed during the filming.

After filming and editing, the music video is sent for color correction. In the current work, bright and saturated colors were used without applying unnecessary effects in post. All stylization was applied already on set using filters.
Why didn’t we add grain or additional filters to the clip to get a more cinematic picture? This should not always be done, but only when it will improve the video.
⬤ 03. Equipment
A Japanese style music video must have a good budget for the production designer.
A Japanese style music video must have a good budget for the art direction because we have to recreate their details here. It will cost money to buy or find and rent accessories, costumes and makeup. If your budget is limited, we recommend paying more attention to the artwork. It is better to use simpler equipment, camera and lenses, but make the sets and costumes well.
