So long!

J:MORS, a prominent Belarusian rock band, approached YOPRST to shoot a music video for an indie rock band for their new single. The idea behind the video was to depict loneliness and the pursuit of a yet unattainable dream. To portray the artist in his youth, a talented teenage actor was cast.

The music video was filmed in one day, and the team spent an additional six days on preparation and seven days on post-production. The project took us two weeks to complete. Thanks to the short preparation period, the production budget turned out to be significantly lower than usual.

Task

The shooting of the music video for an indie rock band was supposed to be completed in a day, and post-production in a week. We had to keep the script idea intact, without going beyond the budget, and to get the desired picture, we more carefully selected locations and worked on them with the artists.

⬤ 01. Challenge

Shooting a music video for an indie rock band on a low budget makes the job difficult.

A music video for an indie rock band is always a long-awaited event for fans of the band. J:MORS always creates songs that are important to Belarusians, and often contain meanings that are important to them. Our task in this clip was to reflect the meanings that the author wanted to convey, but without repeating himself. You can’t shoot a music video for an indie rock band in such a way as to repeat in the video what is sung in the text. This will be considered a clear failure unless the director did so intentionally. Moreover, this should be obvious to the audience.

When you need to shoot a music video inexpensively, you are faced with a difficult choice. In this case, you need to keep the story complete and at the same time not limit yourself too much in the means of production. If you want to use the crane and it is fundamental to the plot, then you will need to change the script.

The task that the performer set for the video production company was solved in the best possible way when the script was written. It required few locations, just one actor, a small amount of equipment and props.

⬤ 02. Production and post

A music video for an indie rock band must be produced by a team that is passionate about the project.

The music video for an indie rock band J:MORS turned out stylish and melancholic. A high-quality choice of camera, optics and filters allowed us to create a pleasant look reminiscent of shooting from the 90s. We prepared three locations for the entire production, outdoors and indoors. The attic belonged to one of the film crew’s friends, and everyone decorated it together. The most important thing in such projects is a good script. A music video for an indie rock band should have an interesting story, which in this case it does.

It often happens that shooting a video with a small budget gives a more interesting final result compared to a video with a larger budget. There are many examples that can be given, but the current work turned out to be very interesting. Gloomy streets of residential areas from the outskirts of Minsk, the attic of a house, a forest in the city center.

Sasha Aleinikov chose locations for the video next to each other so that travel and preparation were quick. And the decor and props were well done by the art post Gena Tumilevich, whose work you have seen, for example, in Wargaming or MTS.

In some scenes of the video, the lighting was very simple, and some scenes were shot in natural light, even without modifiers, blocks or other frames. The music video was shot in 4:3 format with softening soft filters (black pro mist) to get a soft, hazy picture, like in French cinema.

To emphasize the style of shooting the video on film, grain and film onion were added at the color correction stage, and the color palette was made in yellow and aquamarine tones.

⬤ 03. Equipment

A music video for an indie rock band can be shot with a set of inexpensive equipment.

The music video for an indie rock band was painted in a classic scheme under VHS, a slightly over-the-top contract effort. The clip was supposed to look vintage, with a slight glow around the edges and a blurry image. The colors were initially chosen to match each other. The general colors were chosen to be blue and green, and the color spots were chosen to be red. The whole team was passionate about the project, and therefore, in our opinion, it turned out to be successful. Opinion from outside

The clip reminds of dreams

“The video fits well with this song and reminds us of the dreams that every person has. We put ourselves in the place of the main character who remembers himself in the past. It seems to me that he is still dreaming about something or regretting something undone. Brings up positive thoughts.”
